In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, many communities are holding “days of service” events, encouraging citizens to donate their time to aid in projects like painting community centers, working with youth, and donating blood. Many individuals regularly volunteer for programs that have meaning for them, such as literacy programs, hospices and hospitals, and animal shelters. Volunteers not only help others, but by doing so, ofter gain or strengthen valuable skills that can be used in employment. Don’t forget to list any volunteer experience on your resume. It illustrates to potential employers that you have some valuable skills like commitment and time management, and just as important, compassion for others. Volunteering is also good way to get a sampling of a field that you may be interested in pursuing. If you think your life-calling is to be a veterinarian, consider volunteering at an animal shelter to gain hands-on experience working with all different kinds of animals and varying temperaments. If you wish to teach, volunteer for a community literacy program or in your community school district. Volunteering is also a way to create an internship. Utilizing your clerical skills for non-profit organizations will allow you to strengthen your phone skills, word processing, and customer service skills. Remember, employers are not just looking at paid experience. To find volunteer opportunities in your community, contact your United Way office, check listings in your local newspaper, or search Google. Your community will thank you!

According to the Wall Street Journal

The U.S. economy added 115,000 jobs in April as hiring slacked off for the second straight month, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, dipped to 8.1% from 8.2%, as nearly 350,000 people dropped out of the labor force. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires expected a gain of 168,000 in payrolls and for the jobless rate to remain at 8.2% in April.

On a positive note, March payrolls grew by an upwardly revised 154,000 from an initially reported 120,000, and February payrolls posted a gain of 259,000, compared with an earlier estimate of 240,000. The report showed that private companies again fueled the growth, adding 130,000 jobs in April. Job growth came from a variety of sectors. Professional and business services, which include temporary help, engineering, and software design, added 62,000 jobs

I recently received a nice e-mail from one of our customers that I thought deserved sharing. “Just a bit about Action Associates! I actually tell everyone about them. I have found them to be quite helpful at finding people jobs. Action does everything in their powers (which I have found to be MAGICAL) to find associates that meet our needs. Everyone that I speak with at Action seems like an old friend. If I need something they are right there to help the best they can. What a great sense of humor they all have too. They are just plain ole FUN. I look forward to our phone conversations, no matter who I speak with and I do get a bit sad if I get a voicemail. That just means that they are busy, busy, busy little beavers interviewing, calling and setting up interviews so they can get us the best workers they can. I have had a great relationship with them all and look forward to our continued friendship.”

Facebook participation grows by leaps and bounds daily, allowing “friends” to keep in touch. You can share personal updates, funny YouTube videos, and your opinions on any subject you choose. With social media’s growing popularity, employers are also utilizing sites such as Facebook to post positions, search for candidates, but more importantly, learn about current and potential employees. Remember this the next time you want to rant about your job, your boss, your co-workers, the lousy cafeteria food, etc., etc., etc.

While there is current debate in Congress and questions being posed regarding the legality of employers asking to see your personal profiles during the hiring process, employers sometimes use social media sites to determine if their potential candidates like to “trash talk” their current employers. If you have any negative postings regarding your current employer, there is a very good chance that your employer will find out about it–usually through your “friends.” Remember the old adage, “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all?” This may be the best advise regarding any postings about your job. You can try to rely on security settings to limit who sees your information, but be sure to keep up with the frequently changing settings on Facebook.

Everyone has bad days. Before you decide to share yours with the world, please think twice. A short outburst on Facebook could result in a long string of bad days.
